Right from the start, the McKays were committed to making doors and windows of the highest quality, using a time-honoured mortise-and-tenon construction. This ensured that every door and window they made was incredibly strong, and would last a lifetime. (If only we could count how many of them are still in place decades later, in fine working order!) The same construction method is used in the McKay workshop today.
During the 1960s, Keith's three sons, Ken, Keith Jr and Ian, came into the business. New services were added at different times, including cabinetry and stair building. But the core focus was always on custom timber doors and windows, and so it remains.
In 2015, McKay Joinery became part of timber fabrication business Charles Sandford and moved to its current Preston location. Both businesses share the same commitment to the highest quality timber craftsmanship, and our union means that we can now offer a fully integrated range of timber fabrication services. Our customers include many of Melbourne's leading builders and architects, and homeowners. And we've established a reputation as the leading experts in timber fabrication for heritage restoration projects.
Ian McKay still manages the workshop. And in his team there are craftspeople who have been with the business almost as long: Scott, over forty years; Craig, one year less; Alan and Steve, thirty-five years each. It speaks to the level of skill and experience we bring to every project, and also to the passion we have for making beautiful custom timber doors and windows. It hasn't changed since 1948.
